The SDKECA Shares Advice on Avoiding Kitchen Hood Cleaning Scams

The San Diego Kitchen Exhaust Cleaners Association (SDKECA) has lamented the complaints that their industry is getting in view of kitchen hood cleaning scams offered to unsuspecting members of the hotel and restaurant industry.

SDKECA President Keith Brady was interviewed by a local news publication about the matter and he mentioned that such reports are alarming and that business owners should be educated as to how to avoid these types of scams.

"We are not surprised as these scams happen in any industry, but we are just concerned over the restaurants and small businesses who may have fallen for the trap of super low service prices only to be shortchanged. And the problem with these scams is that it puts the company in trouble not just in complying with state and federal rules, but in creating potential safety hazards that could affect the restaurant's employees and their customers," says Brady.

The SDKECA says there are ways to spot a scam, and usually these are companies that offer their service on a door to door basis. "If someone comes by and offers service without even asking, ask yourself right away why they need to peddle their service? Another reason for the door-to-door servicing is another alarming red flag - the company in question does not have a permanent shop of office which is a permanent requirement for any business to operate," explains Brady. Brady added that company licenses need to be verified and not just shown so that the business owner can be sure of the license's validity. This can all be done online through the state license board's website itself or other reputable websites. Doing a background check will also help according to the SDKECA. "A good company will have a track record that could prove that it provides highly satisfactory services. Fortunately our generation has access to these through third party service ratings website, the social media, and the internet in general.

The SDKECA also encourages restaurant owners to get at least three quotations from the companies that they have earmarked and compare their quotes well. "Do not jump on signing in with the lowest bidder because there may just be a misunderstanding of the job at hand, or there could be hidden cost, or the job may be haphazardly done," advises Brady.

Brady says taking a look at the company's memberships in industry organizations like the SDKECA is a good gauge of the company's track record. "We will never allow our ranks to be infiltrated by incompetent and unlicensed fly-by-night kitchen hood cleaners who may do more harm than good to the restaurant industry and its members," Brady assures.
